# Reaction Roles

## What are Reaction Roles?

Reaction roles are roles you can get by reacting to a message. These can be color roles, notification roles, and much more! You can set these up easily by following these steps.

## Preparation

**Mobile Users:** For this guide, you will need developer tools enabled. For more information on enabling developer tools, check out [**this guide**](https://support.discordapp.com/hc/en-us/articles/206346498-Where-can-I-find-my-User-Server-Message-ID-) by the Discord team.

## Step 1: Message

In your server, choose a channel that you would like the reaction role message to be in. Then, send a message instructing users to react with an emoji to get a role.

![](/files/-MMxUH7UsAmuKC35tU-z)

## Step 2: Role

Create the role in your server you would like users to get when reacting.

![](/files/-MMxUhE9dogj5cWTFlmj)

## Step 3: Creating the Reaction Role

In any channel, run `ch!rr create`. This will start the reaction role creation process.

![](/files/-MMxVS_rd9UXjLHNO5gD)

If the bot asks you to upvote, press the link that says [**Click Here**](https://channelbot.xyz/vote2), and complete the process there. Upvoting limitations can be bypassed by purchasing [**premium**](https://channelbot.xyz/premium), then run `ch!rr create` command again to continue.

![](/files/-MMxW4Ca8a-W9Gb4Dsyo)

The bot is now asking for the channel that the reaction role will be in. Send the channel mention that the message you sent earlier is in.

Ex. `#get-roles`

![](/files/-MMxWsZucWO6zItNtKvq)

**Desktop Users:** Next to the message you sent earlier, click the three dots (•••) button, and press "Copy Message Link", and paste it into the channel you are doing the setup process in.

**Mobile Users:** Make sure you followed the step earlier [**here**](/guides/reaction-roles#preparation), and then hold down on the message you sent earlier. A new menu will appear, and you should see a button at the bottom saying "Copy ID". Paste this in the channel you are doing the setup process in.

![](/files/-MMxY8A7rdoDEbByvVT3)

Now, you need to send the emoji you would like users to react with. This can be a default Discord emoji, or a custom one!\
Ex. `:green:`

![](/files/-MMxYO3J5CJSrdIse1xX)

Now, send the name of the role you would like users to get when reacting. **Make sure ChannelBot's role is above this role or it will not work.**

![](/files/-MMxYkJuAOML8aYLjTOP)

If you see this message, you have successfully created the reaction role! If you don't see this, or an error happened early on, check out [**this**](/guides/reaction-roles#troubleshooting).

## Step 4: Testing

To test that the reaction role works, go to the message you sent in the beginning. If you see a emoji, the reaction role worked. Click on the emoji and check your roles. If the role was added, your reaction roles are working perfectly. If not, check out [**this**](/guides/reaction-roles#troubleshooting).

![](/files/-MMxZ9y5MJuQaBVB7R51)

## Troubleshooting

#### Here are some common mistakes and how to fix them.

* If the bot says "invalid reaction" or doesn't respond after sending the emoji, make sure that you sent am emoji from the server, or a default discord one.
* If the bot says "invalid role", make sure that the role name you sent is a role in your server.
* If no emoji shows, make sure that the bot has permissions to react to messages in the channel. A simple way to confirm this is by giving the bot "Administrator" permissions.
* If reacting to the message does not give a role, make sure that ChannelBot has a role above the role you are trying to add.

If you are still confused or need help, please join our [**support server**](https://channelbot.xyz/support).

# Sticky Messages

Create messages that stick to the bottom of a channel!

## What are Sticky Messages?

Sticky messages are messages that stay at the bottom of a channel. You can create messages that users will see before sending a message. Check out this gif for a good example:

![](/files/-M_YUyT3GaHVb1l9wJtk)

## Sticky Message Setup:

Inside the channel you would like to create the sticky message in, run `ch!sticky message` with *message* being the message you would like to stay at the bottom of the channel.

And boom! You're all done!

## Delete a Sticky Message:

To turn off the sticky message in a channel, run `ch!sticky off` in the channel.

# Welcome Messages

## What are welcome messages?

Want to welcome new users to your server? ChannelBot will either DM them or send a message in a channel when a user joins!

## Method 1 (Recommended):

Navigate to [**https://channelbot.xyz/dash**](https://channelbot.xyz/dash) in your browser. It will prompt you to log in with discord. Press "Authorize", and then select your server from the list, and click the welcome tab.

![](/files/-MMx_Teb3GKgCwFif5EA)

**Channel Welcome Messages:** If you want to set up a channel welcome message, enable it by turning on the switch. Select the channel you would like the message to be sent in from the dropdown, and type the message you would like to send! Check out the [**placeholders**](/guides/placeholders) if you would like to put the user's username in the message, and more! Then, press the save button.

![](/files/-MMxa2Wb-vWPQvEaCeZI)

**DM Welcome Messages:** If you want users to be direct messaged a welcome message when they join your server, turn on the switch in the DM welcome message box, and type the message you would like to send! Check out the [**placeholders**](/guides/placeholders) if you would like to put the user's username in the message, and more! Then, press the save button.

## Method 2:

Run `ch!welcome setup` and follow the instructions.&#x20;

# Join To Create Voice Channels

## What is a join to create voice channel?

A JTC voice channel is a voice channel that allows members to join to create their own channels. Below is a video of it working:

![](/files/-MMxbrV1jcfe4PMSP8D1)

## Preparation

Create a category that the voice channel will be in! This will be used later.

![](/files/-M3Dl0UkIrYlWtDuuktf)

## Setup

In any channel, run `ch!privatevc`. This will start the setup process! The bot will ask you for the name of a category. Send the name of the category you created the step above.

![](/files/-MMxc-06HBuFTqbZkGYD)

Now, the bot will ask you for the name of the channel. Send the name you would like the Join To Create channel to be called. I chose "Join to Create" for this tutorial.

![](/files/-MMxc4csKfxqkLdesUal)

And you're done! Changing any of the channel settings, like the user limit or bitrate will be cloned into the user's channels! Test the channel by joining it and seeing what happens. If all goes well, it should look something like this:

![](/files/-MMxcIAKw9BWtkUBEzm7)

## Need Help?

If you have a question, or if something isn't working, don't hesitate to ask it in our [**support server**](https://api.channelbot.xyz/support)!

# Temporary Channels

## What is a temporary channel?

A temporary channel is a channel that is created when a user reacts to a certain message, and is deleted when they remove the reaction. These can be easily set up with ChannelBot.

## How do I setup a temporary channel reaction?

### Step 1: Prep

Before you setup the reaction, make sure you have created a category for channels to be created in. I called mine "Temp" for this example, but you can choose whatever you'd like.

![](/files/-MNRIRxUN9aYuZIGsaX4)

### Step 2: Command

Run `ch!tempchannels create`. This will start the setup process.

If you are prompted to upvote, click the link and upvote, then run the command again.

![](/files/-MNRJIWKO24CJuXotGBk)

The bot will ask you for the reaction channel, as shown above. This is the channel that the reaction to create a channel will be in. Send the #channel mention.

![](/files/-MNRJQ9TyMnSQzk1USzi)

Next, the bot will ask you for the message. This is the message that the reaction to create a channel will be on.

**Mobile Users:** Make sure you have dev tools enabled by following [**this guide**](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/206346498-Where-can-I-find-my-User-Server-Message-ID-). This will allow you to copy the message's ID. Hold down on the message, and click "Copy ID" and send it to the channel.

**Everyone Else:** Click the three dots next to the message and click "Copy Link" and send it to the channel.

![](/files/-MNRK4WkLRvmnMftxu6q)

Next, it will ask you for the emoji. This is the emoji users will click on to create their channel. Send your choice of emoji to continue.

![](/files/-MNRKF9UFoBaWfekQP_G)

Finally, it will ask you for the category. This is the category you created in the prep step earlier. Send its name to continue, and if you get a success message, you're done!

### Step 3: Testing

Click on the reaction you created, and see if the channel is created! Let us know in our [**Support Server**](https://channelbot.xyz/support) if you need help!

## How do I delete a temporary channel reaction?

To delete a temporary channel reaction, run `ch!tempchannels delete`. It will send a list of temporary channel reactions, and ask for the ID of the one to delete. Send the number to the left of the one you want to delete to delete it!

## Troubleshooting

Let us know in our [**Support Server**](https://channelbot.xyz/support) if you need any help!

# Voice Text Linking

## What is voice text linking?

Some users don't like to speak in voice channels, but still want to participate! By creating a voice linked channel, users who join the voice channel will be able to see and talk in the text channel, and when they leave, they will lose access.

## Setup

Make sure you have a voice channel, and have created a channel a channel to link it to. Here's what my channels look like.

![](/files/-MMxdP2_22Jy_FzrXwss)

## Link the Channels

In the text channel you want linked, run `ch!voicelink <channel name>`. I specified "Talk" so I could link it to the Talk channel.

![](/files/-MMxfUe48sEmxwsqm2da)

## Unlinking Channels

If you don't want your channel to be linked anymore, run `ch!voicelink unlink` in the text channel to clear all links.

![](/files/-MMxffj39Q8Xctbf1exo)

# Server Setup

## What is server setup?

If you want to start a community, a friend group, or anything else, ChannelBot server setup is a great way to get started! Choose from a variety of templates, and ChannelBot will create all roles, permissions, and channels for you!

## How to setup your server:

In your server, run `ch!serversetup`. If the bot prompts you to upvote, follow the instructions.

Once you have upvoted, run the command again. You should see something like this:

![](/files/-MN-OCLtFdO08kw2jUJ4)

Choose one of the templates, and send the name of the template to the channel. The bot will ask you to confirm if you want to setup your server. **Setting up your server will delete all channels, roles, permissions, and emojis that were there before, so use caution!** Run `ch!confirm` if you would like to continue, or wait 10 seconds to cancel.

If you continue, the bot should start deleting all channels and roles, then creating new roles and channels. You will receive a DM when it is complete.

# Server Backups

## What are server backups?

If you are worried that your server will be raided or destroyed, you can create a backup. Backups backup roles, channels, permissions, and some messages, so you don't have to worry about losing everything. Backups can also be restored in a different server.

## Backup Limits

You can create one backup every 25 minutes, and unused backups are deleted from our database after 10 days. Once you restore a backup, the backup is gone forever.

## How To Create a Backup

In your server, run `ch!backup`. Depending on the amount of roles and channels, this could take a while. Once you see the conformation message, your backup was saved! Check your DMs for the backup ID and other info.

![](/files/-MN-MenTPDcLoix6jUTc)

## How To Restore a Backup

To restore a backup, run `ch!restore <backup ID>`. The bot will ask you to make sure you want to do this. **Restoring a backup will delete all channels, roles, permissions, and emojis.** Run `ch!confirm` in the next 15 seconds to continue, or do nothing to cancel. If you accidentally restore a backup, there is nothing we can do to fix it.

After you confirm, the bot will delete all channels and roles, then create them. You will receive a DM when the bot has finished restoring a backup.

# Placeholders

A list of placeholders used in welcome messages.

### What are placeholders?

Placeholders are variables replaced with content whenever they are used in things like welcome messages. For instance, the `[userid]` placeholder is replaced with the user's id. Here's a full list.

### Placeholder List

# v5 Changelog

After 3 months of work and then like 5 months of nothing lol we finally got around to finishing the version 5 update! We've completely rewritten the bot and improved the codebase a lot. We've added new features, ported all commands to support slash commands, fixed bugs, and improved the way the bot functions in general.

Because this update has so many changes, there's likely a lot of bugs in commands, and we'll work on fixing them over the next couple of days.&#x20;

## Big Changelog

### Whole-bot Changes

* **Slash commands!**
  * We've added slash command support for all commands! They're much easier to interface the bot with, so we highly recommend using them.
* **Buttons/Other Components**
  * We've integrated buttons and other components into features and commands that previously used reactions (confirmations, etc)
* **Command/Message Edit Running**
  * Spell a command wrong? Don't worry! You can edit that message to run the command again instead of re-sending it.
* **Better Command Argument Parsing**
  * We've improved the parsing of command arguments to now support the same parsing for all commands. Here's what every command now supports:&#x20;
  * **Users:** User mention, ID, Username
  * **Roles:** Mention, ID, Name
  * **Channels:** Mention, ID, Name
* **Better Command Handling**
  * We've improved command handling on the bot! Try running `ch! ------h-EL-p` and observe that it still parses the command. This is an extreme example, but you can put -'s anywhere and use any case you'd like.
* **Better Command Formatting**
  * We've improved the general formatting of command responses to be more user friendly, and just look better in general!
* **Better Dashboard Handling**
  * We've rewritten the backend for the dashboard to improve it and fix a lot of bugs.

### New Commands

* **Button Roles** - `/buttonroles`
  * Reaction roles, but with buttons! Setup messages that when you press a button, a role is added or removed from a user.&#x20;
* **Auto Thread** - `/autothread`
  * Automatically create a thread on any message in a channel!
* **Dashboard** - `/dashboard`
  * Get a quick link to the server's dashboard.
* **Emoji Lock** - `/emojilock`
  * Lock an emoji to a specific role in your server.
* **Play (Activities) \[BETA]** - `/play`
  * Play games in voice channels!
* **Clear Perm, Clear Perm All** - `/clearperm`
  * Like `/delperm` but sets a permission to `/` instead of on or off.

### Updated Commands

* **Add/Del Perm, Add/Del Perm All** - `/addperm`
  * Instead of a multi-step process, you can add a permission all in one command!
* **Clear Channel** - `/clearchannel`
  * Now has an "Are you sure" confirmation message to prevent accidental clears!
* **Create Channel** - `/createchannel`
  * Slash command support only, much simpler interface and more channel types.
* **Temporary Locks/Hides** - `/lock` `/hide`&#x20;
  * These now unlock and show at much much more accurate times with a new timing system.
* **Sticky Messages** - `/sticky`
  * Most of the previous sticky message bugs have been fixed! You can now use emojis or spam channels a ton, and the message will always appear after the newest one.
* **Temporary Channels \[DEPRECATED]** - `/tempchannels`
  * Now only works with buttons, previous reaction temp channels will still work. Deprecated in favor of threads!
* **Voice Link** - `/voicelink`
  * Better support for multiple text channels for one voice channel, common bugs fixed.
* **Role All** - `/roleall`
  * Better handling of mass-adding roles, status updates.
* **Backup/Restore** - `/backup`
  * Backup and restoration commands are now both moved to `/backup create` and `/backup restore`. Confirmation messages are added to prevent accidental backup creation.
  * We've improved the backup code, but there might be bugs.
* **Mods Commands (addmod, delmod, etc)** - `/mods`
  * All mod management commands have been moved over to `/mods`
* **Server Setup** - `/serversetup`
  * We've removed the "support" template due to little use.
* **Welcome Messages** - `/welcome`
  * Fixed a couple placeholder bugs
* **All Settings Commands** - `/settings`
  * We've moved all settings commands (autodelete, modonly) to be subcommands of the settings command.

Aaand that's all of the major changes! Most of the commands not listed here have subtle changes in formatting or arguments, so you might notice those as well.

## Thank You!

Thank you so much for using the bot, and for sticking with us every time we said "that'll be fixed in the next update". We really appreciate it, and glad you all enjoy using the bot.

There *will* be some bugs we need to iron out over the next couple of days, so hold tight and let us know if you find anything!

We've put months of work into this update, and if ChannelBot has helped you we'd super appreciate it if you [**donated to the project**](https://channelbot.xyz/premium)! You get some perks and help support the work we've put into it.

# Changelog 11/27/20

ChannelBot v4, new website, dashboard, and reorganized docs!

After months of tiring work, we're happy to bring you ChannelBot version 4! We've added new features, fixed bugs, recoded every single command, built a dashboard and changed up our website! Thank you so much for waiting, and we're thankful that you were part of this journey. First of all, I'd like to give a big thank you to our wonderful beta testers! Zoin, BeanJR, Differential flux, Reptetion, unbelievable 🍕, and Ryan, and an even bigger thanks to Mason for helping A LOT with the development of version 4.

We've changed ChannelBot's database to MongoDB from JSON, which is a lot more secure, faster, and gives us a lot more flexibility! And last but not least, we're excited to release our Dashboard! Though it has only basic settings, it's a lot easier to manage some things on the dashboard instead of with commands on Discord. This dashboard is still new, and there may be some bugs crawling around, so be sure to let us know if you find any! Check it out [**here**](https://channelbot.xyz/dash).

### - Removed Features/Commands

* **All Moderation Commands**
  * Being the most incomplete and unused module, we've decided to remove the kick and ban commands, as we wanted to go more in depth into the channel management and server management field.
* **Role Mentions In Commands**
  * ChannelBot no longer sees role mentions as a role resolvable. This means that when the bot asks for a role in a command, it's asking for a role name.
* **Delete Pin Delay**
  * ChannelBot now instantly deletes pinned message notifications instead of allowing you to set the delay before it does.
* **Development Template**
  * We've removed the development template, as it isn't used very much anymore.

### Premium Additions

* **Default Roles**
  * Select the roles that ChannelBot changes permissions for when running the lock, unlock, hide, and show commands!

### Premium Changes

* **Addpermall & Delpermall**
  * You can now specify multiple permissions at once, as well as adding voice channel permissions.
* **Upvote Restrictions**
  * Premium servers can now bypass the upvote restriction for backups.
* **Premium Suggestions**
  * Premium users' suggestions now get priority!
